SSS 2019-2020: US-China Strategic Competition

The 2019-2020 Security and Strategy Seminar (SSS) was an in-depth look at the new era of strategic competition between the United States and China, consisting of 15 sessions from September 2019 to June 2020 in Washington, DC.

Over the course of these sessions, taught by guest instructors from top universities and public policy think tanks, fellows gained a deeper understanding of the history of America’s relationship with China and the challenges we face today as competition with China intensifies in military, political, economic and technological arenas. Sessions covered the history of US-China relations from 1784-present; the nature of the PRC, including party ideology, systems of control, and the economy; China’s grand strategy; and competition with the US in military, political, regional, and functional theaters. In the end, they considered a question policymakers are asking themselves today: what is the right American stance toward strategy with respect to China?

Drawing from a competitive pool of applicants, our 21 Security and Strategy Seminar fellows were rising leaders in foreign policy and national security, hailing from think tanks, the private sector, and various government agencies.

SSS provided an opportunity to discuss the history of the U.S.-China relationship, as well as pressing policy issues in the present. The variety in the discussion topics and speakers were very insightful.”
